Activities are given a high priority at St. Bernards.
A holistic approach is taken to ensure our residents enjoy the best possible quality of life. The activities team consists of 2 dedicated members although all staff are involved in many of the events through planning and participation.
Our in-house training programme is aimed at providing ‘activity at the heart of care’. All staff follow this training programme, not just the care staff, but our administrators, maintenance, catering and house-keeping staff also. The ambition of St Bernards is to deliver ‘Person Centred Care’ to every individual through every team member to the benefit of our residents.
A varied programme of activities is prepared and designed to provide entertainment, exercise and stimulation. Regular exercise classes, music afternoons, quizzes and craft classes are all part of the programme. A visiting chiropodist, hairdresser and aromatherapist are arranged for personal treatments. Church visits can be arranged on request as can delivery of newspapers and magazines.
Small group visits to the local shops and garden centres are encouraged and a Christmas dinner and dance at a local hotel is a successful annual event. Special days such as Halloween and Bonfire Night are celebrated with a ‘Theme Night’ and the annual Summer Fete is another occasion for friends and family to join residents for a fun social event.
Our monthly Activities Diary details the programme of events scheduled.
We also try to meet individual requests such as church visits, bridge club, or a night out for supper to the country pub. Each individual is allocated a ‘Key Worker’ who is responsible for personal requests of resident and family.
We record many of our events through photos and film. Our reception screen displays photos from recent events and our iPad is a popular resource for viewing photos and films of our events. We have even Skyped grandchildren in South America.
We also give our residents opportunity to discuss and contribute to activities with out monthly resident meetings open forum for discussion.
Not only that, with our bespoke St Bernards iPAD app we are able to create an individual profile for each resident that features activity and meal choices records, allowing us to accurately understand and cater to every preference.
My aunt has settled in very well and I feel as thought a great weight has been lifted off my shoulders knowing that she is safe and well looked after. The thing that impresses me most is the number of staff that are always on duty and genuinely seem to care and enjoy their job.
