Special Initiatives at St. Bernards

There is always something to look forward to at St. Bernards, and we pride ourselves by always going that step ahead for our staff and residents.

Bernards Residential Care has a history of always going above and beyond for the well-being of residents and staff. Investment into the home has always been at the forefront to ensure the absolute best in care and working conditions.

From award-winning home renovations to cutting edge technology, here are some of the initiatives we have in place, which has made this family-run care home a special place to be part off.

“Home is where love resides, memories are created, friends always belong, and laughter never ends.”

Technology Advancements at St. Bernards Residential

SONOS

Sonos is the ultimate wireless home sound system where the homes WiFi network allows brilliant sound to fill rooms with thousands of different music to choose from.

The idea behind having this ‘smart’ technology is to ensure each room has a different purpose and feeling. The ‘Engage’ programme uses music as one of its tools to connect with residents and create the desired environment.

Portable Interactive Table

This addition to the home is an interactive table that is wifi enabled and portable. Its extra large screen and build-in apps encourage cognitive thinking, sensory, puzzles, music and exploration. This has been a welcomed and well-used piece of technology amongst the residents, especially for those who are not so mobile as it moves on wheels and can be plugged in from room to room.

Facial Recognition clock in for Staff

We have a web based HR and Time & Attendance software system which can be set up with the very latest touch-free facial scanners. The scanners are 4G enabled and suitable for any location and are fully GDPR compliant. This innovative and safe technology also enables us at St. Bernards to clock in and out via our own mobiles, PC or tablet. Both methods minimise staff contact with shared equipment, thereby reducing potential infection through touch to ensure the safety of both staff and residents.

Ipads and Smart Phone Devices

We have a fleet of Ipads that the residents are able to use in order to stream events and shows in the comfort of their own company but also to stay connected with their loved ones through video calls. ‘Nourish’ is a digital Care Plan software that has been integrated into the home, waving goodbye to dated paper format. Each care staff member is assigned a mobile phone on their shift so that they can access all care plans on the go.

Community Cohesion

Intergeneration Project

Care homes are often seen as a place of calm, serenity and quiet. Nurseries are often seen as places of noise, running games and an explosion of toys and craft items. But when the two come together it seems the special bonds created being the two generations bring something out of the other. We have been running our intergeneration project since 2018 with Tender Years nursery. It has always been a huge hit with the residents and a joy to see the young and elderly come together.

Annual Summer Fete

Every year, St. Bernards puts on a summer fete that welcomes all families, residents, local neighbours and friends of St. Bernards. There is something for everyone, from arts and crafts, bouncy castles, stalls, competitions, raffles, live music and the most scrumptious food and drink! Any proceeds made at the fate go towards charity. It is a great way for us to connect with our community and offer a day where we can all unwind and enjoy a summers day.

St. Bernards in Bloom

Residents of St. Bernard’s Road in Solihull open their gardens to neighbours to raise money for charity as well as the opportunity to connect with one another. St. Bernards Road in Solihull is recognised for its beautiful period buildings, which boast large landscaped gardens. It is always a delight to see how varied and creative some of the gardens are, we cant wait for the next Bloom!

The money raised for the Stroke Association was in the excess of £8000, with over 1000 paying visitors in the last St. Bernards in Bloom (2019).

Award winning Builds

PINDERS AWARD: Best Regeneration Project Finalists 2016

St. Bernards Residential Care has always been praised for its beautiful build that dates back to the 1800’s. The period building has undergone many restoration and expansion projects throughout the years, but the charm and elegance has always been kept in tact.

The Pinders Healthcare design awards recognised this, and St. Bernards was thrilled to be finalists for ‘Best Regeneration Project’ in 2016.

St. Bernards Resident Cookbook

Not your average cookbook

The Cook Book is full of residents recipes, with special hints and tips for the reader.  The Cookbook is a tribute to our wonderful residents as their ‘Life Stories’ are bought to life through food and story telling.

Writer, Katherine Buttfield found the process a humbling experience as she listened to residents stories, and documented their incredible tales of war &  hardship and love & friendships.

You can get your copy of the St Bernards Residential Care Home Cook Book by emailing your interest to info@stbernardscare.co.uk.

All proceeds will be donated to the charity ‘Dementia Friends’.
